Overview
Acquired in March 2004, the Aruba refinery has excellent logistics and production capabilities. This refinery further strengthens Valero’s geographic and product diversity.  Plus, the refinery is a great value because more than $640 million has been invested in it over the past five years. In addition, there are very profitable marine, bunkering and marketing operations associated with the refinery.

Output
The Aruba refinery processes lower-cost heavy sour crude oil and produces a high yield of finished distillate products and valuable intermediate feedstocks that can be marketed in the U.S. Gulf Coast, Florida, the New York Harbor and the Caribbean. Because the refinery’s product slate matches up so well with the rest of Valero’s system, we are able to move these feedstocks to our refineries in the Gulf Coast and the West Coast, as well as our Paulsboro, N.J. refinery on the East Coast.  Major refinery units include:

  • Two recently built delayed cokers that have a combined capacity of 64,000 BPD*
  • Two recently upgraded crude units that have a combined capacity of 255,000 BPD*
  • 155,000-BPD vacuum unit
  • 34,000-BPD visbreaker
  • Four hydrotreating units that have a combined capacity of 225,000 BPD
  • 135,000-BPD distillate fractionator

*In early 2007, we expanded our crude and coker units.

Location/Access
Valero’s first refinery in the Caribbean, the Aruba refinery is located on the southern tip of the island, which is about 20 miles northeast of Venezuela.  Not only is it strategically located near key feedstock and product corridors, it is equal distance to major U.S. Gulf Coast and Northeast markets. The Aruba refinery has excellent logistics with two deepwater marine docks with capacity for ultra-large crude carriers, six docks for refined products, 63 storage tanks with almost 12 million barrels of storage capacity, and a truck rack for local sales.
