Overview - West Plant
When we first set into motion our plans to build a state-of-the-art refinery in Corpus Christi, Texas, industry observers began calling the facility “the refinery of the future.” Commissioned in 1983, this revolutionary plant transforms lower value feedstocks into high-quality, premium products.
The Bill Greehey Refinery (Corpus Christi) specializes in the production of environmentally clean fuels and products, primarily RFG and low-sulfur diesel. True to our environmental commitment, it is one of the few plants in the country that can produce 100 percent of its gasoline as RFG, which is required by the Environmental Protection Agency in many areas to improve air quality. In addition, this facility is one of the few refineries outside the state of California that produces and sells the stringent CARB gasoline required in that state.
The Bill Greehey Refinery has been rated by several industry experts as one of the most complex and efficient high-conversion fuels facilities in the world. Since 1983, throughput capacity at the refinery has more than tripled – an impressive statistic that is tempered by our dedication to always grow responsibly. This is evidenced by the fact that all of the equipment on the refinery’s units incorporates Best Available Control Technology to protect the environment. Key units at the refinery include:
- 92,000-BPD heavy oil cracker
- 82,000-BPD hydrodesulfurization unit
- 38,000-BPD crude unit
- 36,000-BPD hydrocracker
- 37,000-BPD naphtha reformer complex
- 11,500 BPD iso-octene plant
Addition to the Bill Greehey Refinery - East Plant
In 2001 Valero acquired a 115,000-BPD refinery located less than a mile from our flagship refinery in Corpus Christi. This facility, referred to as the East plant, is capable of processing heavy, high-sulfur crude oil into light products. Approximately 70 percent of the refinery’s production is light products, including conventional gasoline, ultra low sulfur diesel, jet fuel, petrochemicals, propane, butane and light naphthas. In addition, the refinery produces multiple grades of asphalt and petroleum coke. Major units include:
- 110,000-BPD crude unit
- 20,000-BPD coker unit
- 20,000-BPD fluid catalytic cracking unit
- 12,000-BPD hydrocracker
- 34,000-BPD reformer complex
- 55,000-BPD ultra low sulfur diesel
The East plant was commissioned in the 1960s, and has had several upgrades since that time.
Location/Access
Strategically located on the Corpus Christi Ship Channel, the West plant has 4,700 feet of ship channel frontage, allowing us to off-load feedstock and load products onto tankers and barges with ease. In addition to waterborne transportation, the Corpus Christi plant includes an eight-bay truck rack for servicing local markets, and access to a pipeline distribution network.
