It should be no surprise that television golf analyst and former touring professional David Feherty is known for his wit. He comes by it naturally. In fact, you could say he inherited it from his parents.
Feherty, who grew up in Bangor, Northern Ireland, tells a story about the time his father was late to dinner one night after staying for one too many pints at the local pub. When he asked Feherty’s mother whether his dinner was still warm, she shot back, “It should be – it’s in the dog.”
Those kinds of rejoinders are now familiar to millions of golf viewers due to Feherty’s work as an analyst for CBS Sports. He’s a popular and funny commentator for CBS’s televised golf tournaments, including the Masters and PGA Championship. “I always enjoyed talking more than playing, and now CBS is paying me for what I like to do most,” he says.
Golf Digest and Golf magazine readers have named Feherty their favorite golf announcer, and he’s also the author of several books, including “A Nasty Bit of Rough” and “Somewhere in Ireland, A Village is Missing an Idiot.” In addition, he’s well-known for his popular “Sidespin” column in Golf magazine.
Feherty retired from professional golf in 1997 after a very successful pro career that garnered 10 international victories and over $3 million in prize money. He and his wife, Anita, now live in Dallas, about as far – both geographically and culturally – from Bangor, Northern Ireland as you can get. The 49-year-old Feherty has five children (Erin, Rory, Shey, Karl and Fred), so children’s issues are, needless to say, always front of mind.
And through a partnership with celebrity comedian George Lopez, a foundation was born to serve the children of the Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children – a world leader in the treatment of pediatric orthopedic conditions – and the SpiritHorse Therapeutic Riding Center, which aims to improve the lives of abused children, at-risk youth and the disabled through interaction with horses. The Lopez-Feherty Foundation and its “Irish-Mexican Standoff of Golf” also benefits the Lopez-Feherty Initiative for educational and mentoring programs for Latino students in the United States.
Whether for charity or for a paycheck, “Golf’s Ultimate Wise Guy” is living proof that golf is the ultimate sport.
