Delayed cokers at the Valero Port Arthur Refinery recycle residual oils. The Port Arthur and St. Charles refineries have been recognized by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency for their recycling efforts under the National Partnership for Environmental Priorities (NPEP) program.
Wind Turbine Environment
Environmental stewardship is a core value at Valero. The company has reduced environmental incidents 52 percent since 2007 and made significant improvements demonstrating its commitment to a cleaner environment. For example, Valero:
  • Spent more than $2.6 billion on environmental upgrades at its refineries over the past six years, reducing emissions
  • Became the first traditional refiner to enter large-scale production of ethanol, a renewable fuel, with 10 plants in the Midwest
  • Built wind-powered turbines to improve energy efficiency and reduce Valero’s carbon footprint
Health & Safety

Valero’s most important measure of success always has been the health and safety of its employees, contractors, customers and neighbors. It is Valero’s way of doing business.

  • Valero has the most refineries approved as "Star Sites," the highest plant safety recognition under Voluntary Protection Programs (VPP) of the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and state agencies.
  • The company has reduced injury rates by nearly 62 percent since 2001, drawing upon its knowledgeable workforce and collective experience.
  • Valero's wellness program has been recognized by the American Heart Association as a Gold Level recipient of its Fit-Friendly Companies awards, as well as by the San Antonio Business Group on Health, as part of the 2012 Healthy Workplace Recognition Program.
Pipeline Public Awareness Program

The goal of the Valero Energy Pipeline Public Awareness Program is to enhance safety and environmental protection through increased public awareness and knowledge. Public awareness programs should raise the awareness of the affected public and key stakeholder audiences of the presence of pipelines in their communities and increase their understanding of the role of pipelines in transporting energy. Valero is committed to operating safely and protecting the environment. Increasing awareness in the communities along Valero's pipelines reduces the likelihood and potential impact of emergencies and releases through education and programs like Call Before You Dig.
