The Alamo Community College District Foundation recently received an award of $100,000 from the Valero Energy Foundation. Through the donation, the ACCD Foundation will establish the Valero Energy Foundation Distinguished Scholars program, which will give 25 students a two-year scholarship award of $4,000 to pursue their associate degree.
Entering freshman will have an opportunity to apply for this fund. Eligibility is based on financial need, an academic standing of 2.5 or better and a 12-hour study load at one of the five ACCD colleges. The scholarship is open to all areas of discipline and will be administered by the ACCD Foundation. “Most of our scholarship programs are need or program-based, and Valero’s gift will enable us to reach students that may have great financial need and who can meet the broad-based requirements,” said Chancellor Bruce H. Leslie.
This fall, the ACCD had a record enrollment of 60,366 students register for classes. This is 12 percent more than those who enrolled in Fall of 2008. With higher enrollment, the need for financial assistance becomes greater for qualified students. “Valero has always been a strong supporter of education, and we are honored to present this gift to the Alamo Community College District Foundation,” said Bill Klesse, Chairman and CEO of Valero Energy Corporation.
The ACCD is comprised of five community colleges in the area, which include: San Antonio College, Palo Alto College, Northeast Lakeview College, Northwest Vista College and St. Philip’s College. These colleges offer associate degrees, certificates and licensures in occupational programs that prepare students for jobs. In addition, these colleges also have arts and science courses that transfer to four-year colleges and universities.
“Valero understands the importance of the Alamo Colleges to the San Antonio area, and we are pleased to be able to make a difference in so many students’ lives,” added Bill Klesse.
