Environmental Awards
  • U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has recognized the Valero St. Charles and Port Arthur refineries under is National Partnership for Environmental Priorities (NPEP) program, in which the refineries voluntarily committed to recycle oily material in their petroleum coker operations.
  • Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality presented two Environmental Leadership Program awards to the St. Charles Refinery for developing mobile emission control devices and an electronic notification system for potential process upsets.
  • Quebec's recycling program, Recyc-Quebec, recognized the Jean Gaulin Refinery for reaching its highest "Performance" level in reusing, recycling, upgrading or reducing in quantity more than 80 percent of its plant trash and debris.

 

Safety Awards
  • Nine U.S. Valero refineries are "Star Sites," prestigious safety recognitions under Voluntary Protection Programs (VPP) of the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and the California Division of Occupational Safety and Health (Cal/OSHA). Valero represents about one-third of VPP Star Sites in the U.S. Since 2004, Valero has reduced refinery employee injury rates by 46 percent.
  • Valero's Corpus Christi Asphalt Terminal also holds a VPP Star designation.
  • Twenty-five of Valero's refinery contractors were Star Site-certified at the end of 2011.
  • While Valero's Jean Gaulin Refinery in Quebec is not subject to OSHA regulation, it earned an internal "VPP Star" after passing a first-of-its-kind, VPP-style audit by an independent team of professionals trained by OSHA.
  • Six U.S. Valero facilities in 2011 won at least one award, and a total of 12 awards overall, from American Fuel & Petrochemical Manufacturers, formerly National Petrochemical & Refiners Association (NPRA), for safety performance the previous year. The awards recognize facilities for going the longest periods without employee-lost-workday injuries, reducing recordable injuries and maintaining low injury incidence rates.
  • In rail safety, five major rail companies -- CSX Transportation, Union Pacific, Burlington Northern Santa Fe, Norfolk Southern and Canadian National -- have recognized Valero with prestigious safety awards for four consecutive years.
  • Canadian Pacific Railway awarded Chemical Shipper Safety Awards to four Valero Renewables plants -- at Aurora, S.D.; Charles City and Hartley, Iowa; and Welcome, Minn. -- recognizing efforts of the plants' Shipping and Receiving departments for excellence in transportation safety.
  • Valero Renewables-Fort Dodge earned a safety award in 2011 for Incident Rate Excellence from the Iowa-Illinois Safety Council, for demonstrating outstanding achievement in accident prevention during 2010 with an incident rate lower than the national average for its industry. The council is a chapter of the National Safety Council.

  • For nine consecutive years, Valero ranked among the nation's best employers on Fortune magazine’s listing of the 100 Best Companies to Work For.
  • Valero ranked No. 1 on Fortune magazine's listing of the nation's Best Big Companies to Work For two consecutive years.
  • Valero has ranked No. 5 among petroleum refining companies on Fortune magazine's listing of America’s Most Admired Companies and No. 7 in that same category of Fortune’s Global Most Admired Companies.
  • The company was selected as one of the 2007 10 Best Corporate Citizens in the energy industry by Corporate Responsibility Officer magazine.
  • Valero's Retail operation won a 2009 Outstanding Technology Implementation Award from Convenience Store News, recognizing its swift and successful technology integration of 62 former Albertson's convenience stores into its network.
  • Convenience Store/Petroleum magazine honored Valero as Outstanding Employer in 2008. The company also was named 2006 Convenience Store Chain of the Year by Convenience Store Decisions magazine.

  • Ultramar Ltd., Valero’s Canadian arm, has been named one of Canada's 50 Best Employers for four years by human resources firm Hewitt Associates.
Community & Philanthropic Awards
Valero knows that being a good operator also means being a good neighbor. The company demonstrates that  through a variety of philanthropic efforts, volunteer activities and educational support programs, including its recent donations to Feed the Children.
