Safety Awards
  • Eight U.S. Valero facilities in 2014 received at least one award, and a total of 10 awards overall, from American Fuel & Petrochemical Manufacturers for safety performance the previous year. The awards went to refineries at Benicia, Bill Greehey (two plants, Corpus Christi East and West), Houston, McKee, St. Charles and Three Rivers, and to the Wilmington asphalt refinery.
  • Eight U.S. Valero refineries are "Star Sites," prestigious safety recognitions under Voluntary Protection Programs (VPP) of the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and affiliated state agencies. Valero has the most Star Sites in the U.S. Since 2009, Valero has reduced refinery employee injury rates by 46 percent.
  • Valero's Corpus Christi and Houston asphalt terminals also hold VPP Star designations.
  • Numerous Valero refinery contractors also are Star Site-approved.
  • Valero's Jean Gaulin Refinery in Quebec holds an internal "VPP Star" after passing first-of-its-kind, VPP-style audits by an independent team of professionals trained by OSHA.
  • Valero received several "Stars Among Stars" awards from OSHA in 2014, for low incident rates compared with industry averages. The Houston and Bill Greehey East (Corpus Christi) refineries earned "Star of Excellence Awards" for rates at least 90 percent below industry averages.
  • Valero earned the "Thoroughbred Chemical Safety Award" from Norfolk Southern Corp. for shipping at least 1,000 carloads of materials on the railroad without an incident.
  • Valero Renewables ethanol plants won several awards in 2014. The Albion plant earned a Bronze Award of Honor from the Nebraska Chapter of the National Safety Council and an Occupational Excellence Award from the National Safety Council; Fort Dodge earned a Community Enrichment  Award and a Hazard Recognition Award from the Iowa-Illinois Safety Council; and Welcome accepted a Governor's Safety Award from the Minnesota Safety Council.
  • The Valero Ardmore Refinery won the Valero Chairman's Safety Award for 2014, after posting no recordable employee injuries or Tier 1 process safety events.
Environmental Awards
  • The Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality presented the Environmental Leadership Program Award to the Valero St. Charles Refinery for its coker recycle method that recovers usable oil from waste materials and transforms it into high-value fuel, avoiding the transportation and disposal of waste.
  • The Louisiana Air & Waste Management Association presented the Joseph D. Martinez Environmental Achievement Award to St. Charles, also for its coker recycle process.
  • Quebec's recycling program, Recyc-Quebec, awarded a Silver Grade-level recognition to the Jean Gaulin refinery in 2014 for its efforts in recycling, and improved management and reduction of waste generation. The refinery reached an 88.9 percent waste-recovery rate.
  • The Texas City refinery won the Valero Chairman's Environmental Award for 2014, reducing its environmental scorecard incidents by 17 percent from 2013, and its baseline flaring 90 percent since 2008.
  • A Texas Environmental Excellence Award went to the Valero McKee Refinery in 2013 for the company's wind farm, which operates as Sunray Wind, presented by the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality. The 33-turbine, 50-megawatt wind farm is capable of powering the McKee Refinery, with any excess power going to a local utility. The wind farm won in the Technical/Technology category for reducing reliance on conventional power sources.

 

Business Accolades
  • Fortune magazine's "World's Most Admired Companies" list includes Valero, the top independent refining company and one of only three U.S.-based refiners named to the 2014 list.
  • Forbes' "America's Most Reputable Companies" list included Valero, which scored ahead of other refining companies.
  • Forbes' first-ever "500 Best Employers" included Valero, based on surveys of 20,000 employees of various companies.
  • Valero retained its "Fortune 10" ranking in 2014, No. 10 on the magazine's list of the largest publicly held U.S. companies in revenue, despite spinning off an entire Fortune 500 company, CST Brands Inc., the year before.
  • Worldwide, Fortune ranked Valero No. 30 on its list of 500 largest companies.
Corporate Responsibility & Community Awards
Valero knows that being a good operator also means being a good and responsible neighbor. The company demonstrates that through a variety of philanthropic and volunteer efforts, along with support of education, the military and employee health programs.
  • Valero for the second year was named one of America's most community-minded companies in The Civic 50, an initiative of Points of Light and Bloomberg News that identifies and recognizes companies for their commitment to improve the quality of life in the communities where they do business.
  • Valero is a two-time national Spirit Award recipient from the United Way. Valero and its employees pledged $11.2 million to the United Way for donations in 2015.
  • United Way of St. Charles presented a Spirit Award to the St. Charles refinery, the chapter's highest honor recognizing the area's best overall United Way campaign.
  • Fortune magazine's "Heroes of the Fortune 500" list, and LULAC National Education Service Centers, honored Valero's Sammy Nieto, Manager-Accounting, for his work in founding and developing the Valero Juvenile Justice Mentor Program, which stems truancy.
  • The American Heart Association recognized Valero's wellness program as a Gold Level recipient of the national organization's Fit Friendly Companies awards.
  • The San Antonio Business Group on Health, in collaboration with the Mayor's Fitness Council, honored Valero's wellness program with its 2014 Healthy Workplace Award: Gold Recognition.
