Valero's Port Arthur Refinery received a U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) achievement award recognizing its wastewater-sludge recycling success as a participant in the agency's National Partnership for Environmental Priorities (NPEP) program. The plant recovered and recycled more than 95,000 pounds of the hydrocarbon naphthalene, exceeding its goal of 60,000 pounds, from residual material that previously was disposed off-site.

Valero’s Memphis Refinery earned the Tennessee Chamber of Commerce and Industry Award for Outstanding Environmental Accomplishments three consecutive years – including recognition for hazardous-waste and air-quality management.

The Valero Houston Refinery was recognized with the Valero Chairman's Environmental Award for 2009 by reducing its number of environmental incidents by a dramatic 73 percent from 2008. In addition, the refinery had not had an acid-gas flaring incident in more than two years, and had achieved an 85 percent reduction in emissions since 2003.

- Valero has earned OSHA's highest plant safety certification, "Star Site" status, under the agency's Voluntary Protection Program for 10 refineries, representing more than one-third of all refinery sites nationally. Since entering the program in 2001, Valero has reduced injury rates by 60 percent.
- Valero's Corpus Christi Asphalt Terminal and San Antonio Aviation Department also have received Star designations.
- Twenty-four of Valero's refinery contractors were Star Site-certified at the end of 2009.
- While Valero's Jean Gaulin Refinery in Quebec is not subject to OSHA regulation, it earned an internal "VPP Star" after passing a first-of-its-kind, VPP-style audit by an independent team of professionals trained by OSHA and with a total of 50 VPP audits among its members.
- In rail safety, five major rail companies, including CSX Transportation, Union Pacific, Burlington Northern Santa Fe, Norfolk Southern and Canadian National, have recognized Valero with prestigious safety awards for two consecutive years.
- All of Valero's U.S. refineries for 2008 won at least one safety award from the National Petrochemical and Refiners Association (NPRA), which recognizes refineries for going the longest periods without employee-lost-workday injuries, reducing recordable injuries and maintaining low injury incidence rates.
- The Valero Bill Greehey Refinery complex in Corpus Christi, Texas (East and West plants), won the Valero Chairman's Safety Award for 2009 by recording no employee injuries, and for its work on process safety management. Both plants are Star Sites under OSHA's VPP program, and seven of its contractors were VPP-certified at the end of 2009.
- Houston Zone 201 won the Valero Chairman's Retail safety award for 2009 by achieving a recordable-injury rate of 2.81 (compared to an industry average of more than 4.0) and a 0.35 lost-time injury rate.

- Convenience Store/Petroleum magazine honored Valero as Outstanding Employer in 2008. The company also was named 2006 Convenience Store Chain of the Year by Convenience Store Decisions magazine.
- Ultramar Ltd., Valero’s Canadian arm, has been named one of Canada's 50 Best Employers for four years by human resources firm Hewitt Associates.
