2025 Biodiversity and Conservation Initiatives
The following programs and projects are part of our biodiversity initiatives beyond the company's business activities. We prioritize the needs of local nonprofits and other community stakeholders when selecting biodiversity projects and value these opportunities to engage with our neighbors.
Pontchartrain Conservancy –
St. Charles and Meraux, Louisiana
Valero’s partnership with the Pontchartrain Conservancy—now spanning more than 10 years—has resulted in Valero volunteers from our Valero Meraux and St. Charles Refineries planting over 10,500 trees in their respective parishes. Building on this long-standing collaboration, Valero donated $1 million to the Conservancy in 2021 to support a multiyear swamp restoration initiative.
Wellness Nature Garden – Pembroke, Wales
Valero volunteers at the Valero Pembroke Refinery contributed to local environmental enhancement by planting trees, shrubs, and flower beds in their Wellness Nature Garden, fostering biodiversity, improving green space, and supporting employee wellbeing.
Ocean Guardian School –
Port Arthur, Texas
The Valero Port Arthur Refinery remains a committed Gulf Star Partner with the Gulf of America Alliance, supporting its Ocean Guardian School Program in collaboration with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. Through this program, a teacher leader at Bob Hope Elementary is implementing hands-on conservation projects with students throughout the school year. These initiatives include creating a school garden and enhancing campus landscaping, as well as developing educational brochures and posters to raise awareness about the importance of protecting local watersheds.
Harte Research Institute –
Corpus Christi, Texas
In 2025, volunteers from the Valero Corpus Christi Refineries participated in the Sink Your Shucks Oyster Recycling Program in collaboration with Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi's Harte Research Institute. Volunteers filled over 1,400 bags with oyster shells that were used to support an oyster reef in Aransas Bay.
Sabine Pass Reef Initiative – Port Arthur, Texas
Developed through the combined efforts of multiple organizations, including the Valero Port Arthur Refinery, High Island 54 Shallow is a 20-acre artificial reef located in Texas waters less than two miles from Sea Rim State Park, making it the closest artificial reef to shore in the state. Constructed from more than 200 tons of materials, the reef provides critical underwater structure and habitat, enhancing marine biodiversity and supporting a healthier seabed ecosystem. By restoring habitat in previously barren areas, the project supports marine life and recreational fishing opportunities.
