Overview

The Hartley plant, located on 350 acres about 100 miles southeast of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, produces ethanol, distillers grains livestock feed and fuel- and feed-grade corn oil. With original startup in August 2008, the plant was acquired by Valero in April 2009. 

The plant buys corn directly from farmers within a 40-mile radius, and from commercial elevators as far as 80 miles.

United Way Giving

Employee pledges, additional donations and a company match totaled approximately $54,000 in donations to the local United Way for 2019. The plant annually represents about 35% of donations to the local United Way chapter.

Benefiting Children

In 2019, the plant distributed $35,000 from the Valero Texas Open and Benefit for Children to local charities nominated by employees, including Centers Against Abuse & Sexual Assault, Kaden's Kloset, Kids Backpack Program and Upper Des Moines Opportunity Inc.

Employees and families annually log more than 1,000 volunteer hours, for the local food bank and other organizations.

Safety Awards & Honors

  • Firefighting helmet and equipment

    Multiple quarterly Valero STAR Metric award for achieving no incidents in five key areas of process safety, reliability, environmental, rail safety, and policy and procedure compliance.

  • All-time leader in Valero Chairman’s Renewables Plant Excellence awards, with four dating to 2010, judged across several measures from safety, reliability and environmental performance to production and community support.
