St. Charles Fact Sheet

Overview

The Valero St. Charles Refinery’s major process units were built in the early 1980s or later, making this refinery one of the newest in the United States. Between 2000 and 2002, major upgrades included the construction of a large fluid catalytic cracking unit, alkylation unit and continuous catalytic reformer unit. Since Valero’s acquisition of the refinery with the purchase of Orion in 2003, nearly $4.5 billion has been invested, making the plant one of the company’s more complex refineries. These investmentsenabled the plant to process additional heavy feedstocks, increase throughput capacity, upgrade its product yields and improve on-stream reliability. The St. Charles facility provides intermediate feedstocks to other Valero refineries located along the Gulf Coast. The site also has access to the Colonial and Plantation pipelines for distribution of refined products to numerous markets in the southern and eastern U.S.

  • Gasoline, distillates and other light products represent approximately 80 percent of product slate

  • Located on approximately 1,000 acres in St. Charles Parish, Louisiana, along the Mississippi River, approximately 15 miles upstream of New Orleans with strategic feedstock and product transportation corridors

  • The Diamond Green Diesel plant, adjacent to the refinery, is a joint venture between Valero Energy Corporation and Darling Ingredients Inc.; this facility is boosting its annual production capacity to approximately 18,000 BPD and produces environmentally friendly renewable diesel

  • Access to the Louisiana Offshore Oil Port (LOOP) where it can receive crude oil through pipeline or from five Valero owned and operated marine docks along the Mississippi River

  • Finished products shipped over Valero docks or by pipeline into the Bengal, Colonial and Parkway pipeline networks for distribution to the eastern seaboard of the United States
