The Bill Greehey refineries complex in Corpus Christi, Texas, is two plants. Valero commissioned the grass-roots Corpus Christi refinery in 1983, now referred to as the West plant. This facility is considered one of the most complex refineries in the world and specializes in the production of environmentally clean fuels and products, primarily RFG and ultra-low-sulfur diesel. In 2001, Valero acquired a 115,000 barrels-per-day (BPD) refinery, now referred to as the East plant, located less than a mile from the flagship refinery in Corpus Christi. This facility is capable of processing heavy, high-sulfur crude oil into light products, asphalt and petroleum coke. Combined, the East and West plant facilities have a total feedstock throughput capacity of about 370,000 BPD.

West Plant

  • Commissioned in 1983, facility has more than tripled throughput capacity since starting up
  • Rated by several industry experts as one of the most complex and efficient high-conversion fuels facilities in the world
  • Completed a new crude unit in 2016 with a capacity of 70,000 barrels per day
  • Can produce 100 percent of its gasoline as RFG, which is required by the Environmental Protection Agency in many areas to improve air quality

East Plant

  • The 115,000-BPD refinery acquired by Valero in 2001
  • Processes heavy, high-sulfur crude oil into light products
  • Approximately 70 percent of the refinery’s production represented by light products, including conventional gasoline, ultra-low-sulfur diesel, jet fuel, petrochemicals, propane, butane and light naphthas
  • Also produces multiple grades of asphalt and petroleum coke

  • Total feedstock throughput capacity of about 370,000 BPD
  • Located on 523 acres including the West Plant on the Corpus Christi Ship Channel and the East Plant one mile away
  • West plant with 4,700 feet of ship channel frontage, allowing it to off-load feedstock and load products onto tankers and barges with ease
  • The total complex includes an eight-bay truck rack for servicing local markets, and access to a pipeline distribution network
  • Employs approximately 760 personnel

Awards & Honors

  • Meritorious Safety Performance Award from American Fuel & Petrochemical Manufacturers (AFPM) for 2016, achieving an employee Total Recordable Incidence Rate (TRIR) of 0.5 incidents per 200,000 working hours for the combined plants
  • Holds an OSHA Voluntary Protection Program Star Site designation, the agency’s highest plant safety recognition

Community Activities

  • Combined, pledged more than $534,000 to the local United Way for 2018, with other donations and a company match projected to bring total plant contributions to approximately $803,000.
  • Distributed $600,000 in 2017 to 28 area children's charities from the Valero Texas Open and Benefit for Children
  • Holds many volunteer events logging more than 4,900 total hours annually
